Valentine's musings Part 1:
I have never liked Valentine's Day much, and I can assure you I have never had a romantic one. Yesterday was no exception. Normally Anand and I do not even make a mention of Valentine's day, but when Jules sent me a note asking what Anand and I were doing, I thought I would send him a note saying "happy valentines". So I did, but that was the end of line for me. When Anand got home he made the mistake of telling me that he "was going to get flowers for me". WTF? Either you do or you don't, but you don't say you thought of it and then didn't. That is just lame. I was mildly annoyed and then he proceeded to "explain" that he had called a flower place to see if they would deliver flowers to me and that the delivery fee was $15 but that when he told the flower dude how much he wanted to spend, the flower dude suggested he just come into the shop and pick them up himself. So, I guess the end result was that Anand decided not to get me flowers at all. Nice. Jeez. There are times when it's best just to say nothing; that would have been one of those times.
Part 2:
We have been "dining" at home a lot lately, so I suggested we go to Pakwan (Anand's favorite place in the whole world) for dinner. For those who do not know, Pakwan is about 8 blocks from us and we go there regularly. For about 20 clams you get dinner for two plus leftovers. What a deal. The cuisine is Pakistani Indian and almost always perfectly prepared. If Ali is in da house, he always has great Bollywood music rocking the place, which he sings along to unabashedly. He's a very cheerful and nice guy. One time he even came over to my table to show me something on his cellphone, it was a mehndi he had done on his little daughter! And it was a good design too! He used to decorate cakes... Anyway, back to my point, even though Anand would normally never turn away an opportunity to eat at Pakwan, he suggested we go to Dosa instead because it was Valentine's Day (or maybe to make up for the flowers, or lack thereof), which is closer, with better lighting , a "beautiful people" ambiance, and a functional bathroom. Well, because it was V Day the place was packed! There was no way we were going to wait an hour to sit, and so we then ambled the neighborhood, cruising by our favorite places, but every single place was full. So, we decided to return home. Well, the electricity, just on our block, had gone out! So we didn't even have light to cook by. So we ended up getting take out Mexican food from Papalote and going to sleep (the electricity didn't come back on until the wee hours of the morning).
Well, I guess there's always next year... but for now, I have had my annual reconfirmation that Valentine's Day sucks. I may have to make an excursion to get some chocolates and flowers for myself next week.
